Donald M. Berwick, MD, MPP, FRCP, KBE, is President Emeritus of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), an organization he co-founded and led as President and CEO for 19 years. He is one of the nation’s leading authorities on health care quality and improvement. In July 2010, President Obama appointed Dr. Berwick to the position of Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which he held until December 2011. A paediatrician by background, Dr. Berwick has served as Clinical Professor of Paediatrics and Health Care Policy at the Harvard Medical School, Professor of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health, and as a member of the staffs of Boston’s Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He has also served as vice chair of the US Preventive Services Task Force, the first “Independent Member” of the Board of Trustees of the American Hospital Association, and chair of the National Advisory Council of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. He is an elected member of the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Medicine (NAM, formerly the Institute of Medicine, or IOM). Dr. Berwick served two terms on the IOM’s governing Council, was a member of the IOM’s Global Health Board, and currently chairs the NAM Board on Health Care Services. He served on President Clinton’s Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Healthcare Industry. His numerous awards include the 2007 William B. Graham Prize for Health Services Research, the 2006 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award, and the 2007 Heinz Award for Public Policy. In 2005, he was appointed Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the highest honour in the UK for non-UK citizens. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 scientific articles and six books. He has also served as Lecturer in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School.

John Brownstein, Ph.D is a Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School as well as SVP and Chief Innovation Officer of Boston Children’s Hospital. He directs both the Computational Epidemiology Laboratory and the Innovation and Digital Health Accelerator. Trained as an epidemiologist at Yale University, his research has been instrumental in facilitating the control and prevention of disease, improving public health practice, and engaging the public in health issues. As a pioneer in computational epidemiology, Dr. Brownstein's research is recognized for its translational impact, particularly through the development and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), data mining, and citizen science. His innovative platforms, such as Vaccines.gov, Global.health, and HealthMap, serve millions annually and have received recognition from the National Library of Congress and the Smithsonian. His research was pivotal in the early detection and response to major disease outbreaks, including H1N1 in 2009, Ebola in 2014, Zika in 2015 and COVID in 2019.
Dr. Brownstein's contributions extend beyond academia into advisory roles for agencies including HHS, DHS, FDA, DOD, CDC, WHO, and the White House. As Chief Innovation Officer, his efforts have catalyzed the launch of dozens of new startups and unique partnerships with companies like Google, Amazon, Apple, Uber, Instacart, Microsoft, and OpenAI. He also plays a leading role in shaping the hospital’s comprehensive digital strategy, including the integration of AI to improve patient care.
Dr Brownstein has been honored with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government to outstanding scientists, the Lagrange Prize for international achievements in complexity sciences and an Emmy for his contributions to medical reporting for ABC News during the covid-19 pandemic. Dr. Brownstein is co-founder of digital health companies Epidemico and Circulation and an ABC Medical News Contributor. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles on epidemiology and public health.

With 13 years of experience spanning oncology nursing, nursing leadership, quality improvement, and clinical informatics, she specializes in leveraging technology to improve clinical workflows, patient safety, and healthcare delivery.
In her current role, Alyson leads enterprise clinical workflow and documentation initiatives and serves as an Epic-certified specialist in Ambulatory, Beacon Oncology, and OpTime. She partners with interdisciplinary teams across ambulatory and inpatient settings to optimize electronic health record utilization, enhance clinician engagement, and implement evidence-based solutions that improve patient outcomes.
Prior to her informatics role, Alyson worked as an inpatient oncology nurse, an oncology nurse educator and nurse manager for a 60-chair oncology infusion unit. She has led large multidisciplinary teams, advanced oncology nursing practice, and driven quality and safety initiatives in both academic and community care settings. She is board certified in both Nursing Informatics and Oncology Nursing.
Alyson has presented nationally on oncology informatics and process standardization, including a poster presentation at the 2024 Oncology Nursing Society Congress on standardizing oncology treatment protocol build and validation in the electronic medical record and an upcoming presentation at the American Nursing Informatics Association 2027 conference. She is passionate about nursing innovation, clinician education, and the intersection of informatics and quality improvement to support safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.

Transforming the EHR Experience: Programmatic Approaches to Provider Efficiency and Wellbeing

Kate carries a Master of Science in Health Informatics from the University of New England. A registered nurse by trade, she spent over a decade working on a medical surgical telemetry unit specializing in nephrology, urology, and renal transplant. While working as a nurse, she worked with the IT Implementation team conducting education and training for physicians and APPs for the initial 2012 MMC Epic go-live. She then joined the implementation team full-time from 2014 to 2018 while maintaining clinical per diem work until 2019. She participated in 6 MaineHealth member hospital implementations of Epic during which she transitioned to the role of Instructional Designer & Senior Training Analyst overseeing systems training curricula development, training environment build, and developing a regional trainer model for several Epic clinical applications. She joined the Clinical Informatics team as a Clinical Informatics Specialist in 2018 with the local MMC Clinical Informatics Medical Affairs team and transitioned to manager in 2019. MMC Clinical Informatics Medical Affairs (CI-MA) provides local informatics and build support for many quality & process improvement initiatives as well as IT and operational initiatives with a focus on provider workflows. It is in this role Kate’s passion for clinical informatics drives her desire to not only improve the use of technology and the EHR, but to empower providers, and ultimately contribute to positive outcomes for our patients and community.

Robert Michaud, MD, MPH is a faculty physician in the MaineHealth Internal Medicine Residency Program, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, and physician informaticist at MaineHealth in Portland, Maine. He works at the intersection of clinical care, medical education, healthcare technology, and implementation science. Dr. Michaud has been a leader in MaineHealth's adoption of ambient AI documentation technologies, helping to guide the operational rollout of AI scribe solutions, ambient consent workflows, clinician education, governance, and workflow redesign across ambulatory settings. He also serves as Co-Lead of the Signal Strength Program, an initiative focused on improving clinician well-being and efficiency through technology optimization, analytics, and workflow improvement. His current informatics leadership includes operational oversight of ambient AI initiatives, support for graduate medical education implementation efforts, and contributions to emerging clinical AI governance structures.
His scholarly work focuses on the implementation and evaluation of ambient AI technologies, including their impact on clinician efficiency, documentation burden, and medical education. He has led and collaborated on research examining how AI-assisted documentation influences resident learning, clinical reasoning, workflow, and clinician experience, while exploring strategies to responsibly integrate artificial intelligence into healthcare delivery and physician training. Through his clinical, educational, operational, and research efforts, Dr. Michaud seeks to strengthen the connection between people, processes, and technology to improve the experiences of patients, learners, and care teams.

Her passion for patient care has continued throughout her transition into clinical informatics, where she has found a new way to support patients by supporting the clinicians who care for them.
Karen has been part of the Clinical Informatics team for 13 years and transitioned to informatics full-time in November 2020. She has contributed to Epic optimization initiatives and currently serves as Co-Chair of the CDS-ART committee, a role she has held for the past two years. Her work focuses on analyzing clinical workflows, optimizing technology, providing education, and helping healthcare teams feel more comfortable and confident with technology.
Karen is particularly passionate about clinical decision support and finding the right balance between providing meaningful information and overwhelming clinicians with alerts. Tanikka Patel, MD, grew up in Zambia and earned her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences in the United Kingdom. She subsequently returned to Zambia, where she conducted HIV and tuberculosis research as a laboratory manager before pursuing her medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada.
She now serves as an Academic Hospitalist and Director of Care Progression for the Department of Medicine at Tufts Medical Center. In her leadership role, she focuses on improving patient flow and hospital throughput, with a particular emphasis on reducing length of stay through workflow optimization, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the use of Epic to support care progression and identify barriers to discharge.
Dr. Patel is also actively involved in institutional quality improvement initiatives and an active member of the Length-of-stay, Sepsis and Women in Medicine and Science Committees. She is also deeply committed to medical education and enjoys teaching and mentoring residents, medical students, and physician assistants on the inpatient wards.
